Yo!! What really went down in that first White House meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy? The room went from zero to one hundred in a snap. Why was everyone so triggered?

In general, the entire segment involving Presidents Trump and Zelenskyy seemed staged in order to apply negotiation pressure on President Zelenskyy. The presence of television cameras and seating arrangements were critical factors in elevating this level of pressure. Vice President Vance‘s vocal role most likely happened with the President’s permission, which gives more credibility to the idea that the meeting was premeditated on behalf of the United States of America. This assessment is quite obvious when watching the segment with the volume turned off. The body language alone speaks to the nature of the conversation.
Before listening to the conversation, it’s important to note a few things. Politicians and comedians are a different species of communicators. They tend to be more charismatic and readily equipped to influence the thoughts and emotions of other people. Because of that, any dialogue between politicians usually involves a degree of planning and predetermined strategy.

This is made plain by the fact that the meeting between these two world leaders was televised. Second, the setting takes place in the Oval Office of the White House, which gives Trump a home-field advantage, linguistically speaking. Third, we should notice the seating positions. President Zelenskyy is seated such that he has to communicate with multiple parties where it’s physically impossible for him to keep eye contact or a clear gaze at everyone. This is important because the characteristics of the setting heavily imply the meeting was intended to go a certain way.

President Zelenskyy begins by addressing Vice President JD Vance's question about the nature of war. The Ukrainian President recognizes the circumstances described above and showcases his discomfort by folding his arms, closing in to protect the vital organs because his body is probably telling him that an ambush is ahead.

President Trump is notably looking down and allows Vice President Vance to lead the discussion in a few areas. This is unusual and significant because President Trump commonly leads according to a top-down hierarchy, meaning that he makes the decisions, he expects his subordinates to be loyal, and he prefers to do most of the talking. That’s one of the reasons you probably haven’t seen a video of Barron Trump talking. Ever.

In giving the talking stick to Vice President Vance, President Trump is presenting himself as being distracted, while listening eagerly. The eye contact is away from President Zelenskyy, but he seems to be waiting for some sort of cue.

President Zelenskyy makes the unfortunate mistake of responding to Vice President Vance in the form of a lecture about geopolitical security. This sets the stage for President Trump to jump in and execute what I believe to be the plan of this conversation: to overwhelm President Zelenskyy and catch him off guard in a televised setting that will be shown to the American people in order to pressure him to make concessions in then-ongoing negotiations with Russia.

Indeed, President Trump shifts from being the passive observer to the active aggressor. He imposes himself via body language by moving his arms into President Zelenskyy‘s space and raises his voice periodically in order to emphasize certain points. The sudden shift seems calculated because President Trump anchors his response to one aspect of the conversation: President Zelenskyy‘s comment about how Americans were going to "feel" in the future.

When President Trump says "you’re gambling with World War III!," he raises his voice and repeats himself. This is called doubling, and is used for emphasis. It is probably the main talking point of the entire segment from Trump‘s perspective.

Vice President Vance intervenes following the hostile exchange by scolding President Zelenskyy regarding his manners. This is where the splitting of the audience has maximum effect. As President Zelenskyy is dealing with an imposing figure in his immediate space, he now has to deal with the same from all other front-facing angles of the room. This is incredibly stressful and difficult to negotiate when you are in the hot seat.

Based on President Zelenskyy‘s facial reactions, it seems obvious that the hostile encounter came as a surprise to him, as he is likely making eye contact with his people and hoping for some sort of relief. He adjusts quickly to the mood shift in the room, and abandons his effort of making a logical appeal regarding the situation. He then promptly retreated into a defensive position and likely wanted to take time to reassess the situation based on the new information he received.
