How to make age-appropriate jokes in any setting?

I saw something on Family Guy about making jokes that children don’t understand, the adults do understand, but everyone still laughs. Do you know what I’m talking about and how do I get on that level?

The scene from the television show Family Guy you are referencing is in Season 10, Episode 8, titled "Cool Hand Peter." The character Glenn Quagmire makes an adult-rated joke that is expressed in a thought bubble.

Instead of trying to improvise edgy jokes in an age-diverse setting, I recommend having a stockpile of clean jokes that you can be confident will work.

For example, here is one that works well with an audience of varied ages and cultures: "What did the elephant say to the nude man? (Pause.). That's cute, but can you breathe out of that thing?" Everyone will likely chuckle, although for different reasons. If the adults laugh, the younger listeners are likely to laugh too because humans are prone to mimicry, or copying the behavior of others – especially in a group setting. Giggity!
